Responsible Outdoor Practices: Leave No Trace Principles for Georgia’s Trails

by | May 30, 2025

Most of the time when tourists visit Blue Ridge they are either staying in a cabin or they are camping. It is crucial that tourists and locals alike practice Leave No Trace principles and be good stewards of the land to ensure that we are taking care of our beautiful Blue Ridge!

Here is a list of tips to follow for your trip to make sure you Leave No Trace!

  • Plan Ahead & Prepare
    • Be aware of all regulations for camping before you head to your spot.
    • Pack reusable things like bottles, plates, & utensils so you have less waste.
    • Know check in & out rules for all campgrounds or cabins.
    • Be bear aware! They aren’t scary, just nosey and they sure do like snacks. Don’t leave trash or food accessible to them!
  • Stay on sites & on trail
    • Use established trails, campsites, and fire pits, don’t create your own. Leave natural vegetation be!
  • Manage your waste
    • Have a plan for your trash, like above, remember the wildlife and do not expose them to your garbage.
    • If camping, be sure to bury any human waste at least 200 feet from any water, campsites, or trails.
  • Leave it better than you found it!
    • Don’t carve your name in a tree, pick wildflowers, take rocks, or mess with any artifacts.
    • Leave all furniture, tools, & decor as you found them in rentals.
    • Clean your gear & shoes before coming & going to prevent spreading any invasive species.
  • Respect Wildlife
    • Follow regulations for fishing & hunting.
    • Do not feed any animals!
    • Store your food securely.
    • Observe from a distance.
  • Be considerate of others
    • Keep noise low, especially after dark—sound travels far in the woods.
    • Respect quiet hours at campgrounds and shared rental properties.
    • Keep pets under control and clean up after them.
